The School District of Nekoosa has a detailed emergency operations plan in place to respond to emergency situations. Below is an explanation of each alert category.
We ask for your help in all of the below situations by not calling the schools during these situations so staff can focus on taking care of the emergency. If the lockdown affects your child specifically, you will be contacted as soon as possible!
PREVENTATIVE LOCKDOWN
A preventative lockdown is used in a non-emergency situation to clear the hallways of students. Students are kept in their classrooms and learning continues. Examples of a preventative lockdown are:
- A medical situation to protect the privacy of the student
- A spill in the hallway needs to be cleaned up
- A discipline situation
- Any non-emergency situation that the hallways need to be clear of students
If the lockdown affects your child, you will be contacted as soon as possible.
SCHOOL CLOSING DUE TO WEATHER
In the case of school closing due to weather, we will:
- Send an emergency ParentSquare alert to all contacts (voice, text & email).
- Post on the main page of the District website
- Post on Facebook
- Post on WAOW TV 9 and WSAU TV 7 and share with local radio stations
If you haven’t been notified, a decision has not been made.
EMERGENCY LOCKDOWN
This code is used in response to an actual emergency situation. This is used when there is a threat of violence or serious incident that could jeopardize the safety of students and staff. We practice emergency lockdown drills each term utilizing our A.L.I.C.E. (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) procedures. Do not go to your child’s school unless you have been directed to do so. During an emergency lockdown there will be no entry or exit from the building. During an emergency lockdown we will send a text/voice alert stating we are in an emergency lockdown. We will keep you informed about the lockdown the best we can and a text/voice alert will be sent when the lockdown has been lifted.
EMERGENCY EVACUATION
This code is used for emergency evacuation not related to a fire incident. Discussion on how and where to evacuate is discussed at the beginning of each school year. An example would be a natural gas leak. Students will be kept at school or at an off campus evacuation point and released to their parent/guardian or an adult who has been authorized by you on your online registration forms. During an emergency evacuation we will send a text/voice alert stating we are in an emergency evacuation. We will keep you informed about the evacuation the best we can and a text alert will be sent when the lockdown has been lifted.
The School District of Nekoosa has adopted the ParentSquare Notification System which allows us to send a telephone, text, or email message to you, providing important information about school events or emergencies. We will use ParentSquare to notify you of school delays or cancelations due to inclement weather, as well as remind you about various events.
Your caller ID will display the school’s main number and will leave a message on any answering machine or voice mail.
It is important to verify that phone numbers and email addresses are correct in PowerSchool to insure you receive these important messages. If you do not have a parent portal account set up or are having trouble logging in, please contact the school office.
