The Alexander Middle School will create a culture of trust and ownership with staff, students, and community, and we will create systems that allow us to implement Three Main Strategies that will move us toward our vision
1. HIGH LEVERAGE INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
Literacy:
The workshop model involves teaching discrete reading and writing skills, and then helping individual students apply these grade-level (or better) skills using the text or topic of their choice.
Reader’s workshop (4-8) (Year 3)
Math:
Math teachers in grades 6-8 are working hard to prepare students with the collaborative skills and math knowledge they will need to be successful in the future. We are doing this largely through learning and applying team-study strategies. These are strategies that get students working together to solve math problems that they probably could not solve on their own. Math teachers in grades 4-5 currently use the EnVision Math curriculum. Teachers are investigating a new math curriculum for the 2019-2020 year.
CPM Math (6-8) (Year 2)
Science:
Science teachers in grades 6-8 are are investigating a new science curriculum for the 2019-2020 school year.
Co-Teaching:
Writing lesson plans for specific instructional objectives. Regular and special education teachers co-plan and co-teach, so that all students may be included in all classrooms.
° 2018-2019: All grades 4-8 teachers are focused on co-planning.
2. SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING
Responsive Classrooms (Tier I, Year 2, Grades 4-8)
The responsive classroom helps all students develop social emotional skills such as communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution skills.
Behavioral Support Systems (Year 2):
In the same manner that academic instruction supports individual learners, behavioral systems help students learn social skills necessary for life success. We help students recognize the impact of their behavior on others through leveraging appropriate consequences combined with problem resolution strategies.
3. EQUITY
Regular education and special education teaching staff work together to provide teaching and learning supports for all students in the general education classroom.
