WELCOME TO OUR DISTRICT

Terry Whitmore, District Administrator for the School District of Nekoosa

Hi, I'm Terry Whitmore, District Administrator for the School District of Nekoosa. Thanks for taking the time to peruse our website to learn more about the services the District provides to Nekoosa and the surrounding communities.

I feel very privileged to help lead a District where the students, staff, parents, and community are working hard to prepare students to meet the needs of a changing world filled with challenges and at the same time opportunities to be "difference makers." Our community has inspiring students, outstanding educators and support staff, and a community at large that supports education. All of these attributes work together to make our schools successful.

In order to maximize its efforts, the School District of Nekoosa Board of Education uses a method of school district governance known as Policy Governance. Under Policy Governance, the School Board’s central job is to set specific goals, known as Results, and to ensure that these goals are met.  Below are the "results" that the District continues to work on each and every day to help each student realize their own potential.

1.  Overarching Results

School District of Nekoosa develops students who excel academically, act responsibly, display good character and citizenship, and reason and solve problems rationally.  We focus on preparing our students with the skills they will need in today’s global community.

2.  Academic Performance and Application

All students, regardless of their race, gender, disability and/or socioeconomic status, will be literate in reading, language arts, and math.  All students will be able to integrate and apply the knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies acquired across all academic disciplines.

3.  Self-Directed Thinkers

All students are creative, self-directed thinkers prepared for and able to adapt to a changing world.

4.  Collaborative and Responsible Citizens

All students are productive and collaborative contributors in the workplace and in society.

If you have questions/comments, or would like to meet to discuss ideas you might have toward meeting the above "results" goals, please contact me at 715-886-8000.

Here's why!

Together with the wonderfully diverse people who call Nekoosa home, the District's highly dedicated staff work hard to support and help each child realize his/her full potential. Our educational system is truly aligned to support and build on the successes of each school year.

To meet the varied needs of today's learner, on top of the comprehensive school offerings, the District has diversified its school choice offerings to include a STEM charter school, a virtual school, and an alternative high school option.

Three Key Focus Areas have positioned the District to provide an educational experience that truly prepares students for their dreams beyond high school.

High Leverage Instructional Strategies:
Academic Performance and Application
When many of us went to school, schools and teachers often relied on strategies using grade level textbooks, large group activities, and whole class lecture. The District is learning new approaches to involve all students in the learning process so they can leave high school ready to succeed in a global community.

Social and Emotional Learning:
Self-directed, Collaborative and Responsible Citizens
Successful individual student behavior is linked to school climate.  Our District is working to develop strategies and services that are proactive, model and teach expected behaviors, hold students accountable for ehaviors that impede learning for themselves and others, and improve support or students with emotional and behavior disabilities.

Equity:
Barriers are removed so that all students are expected to and do achieve at high levels, both academically and socio-emotionally.
When some of us were in school, students with special needs were often pulled out and given educational services in a separate room or separate school away from grade level peers.  Today, our regular education and special education teaching staff are working to provide teaching and learning supports for all students in the general education classroom.
