ACADEMICS
Through a gradual release of responsibility, students acquire skills pertaining to reading, writing, speaking and listening. Science, Social Studies, and CARES, which is our social-emotional learning plan, are integrated into our literacy instruction. We use “Bridges” to build mathematical thinkers. Students are also supported through interventions and individual education plans if needed. All students also participate in Physical Education, Music, Art, and Media & Technology.
EXCELLENT STAFF
We are proud of our caring staff who work to meet the academic and social-emotional needs of all learners. All our staff is highly dedicated, compassionate, and wholeheartedly believe in the potential of every student. The people who work in our building play an integral role in inspiring students to believe in themselves and finding their own passion for learning.
As a school community, we are dedicated to up-to-date professional development for our staff which in turn allows them to provide a high-quality educational program that is geared toward meeting the individual needs of all learners.
KIDS CLUBHOUSE: BEFORE/AFTER SCHOOL ONSITE CARE
In partnership with the YMCA, we offer "Kids Clubhouse" as a safe alternative for school-age children in need of school day wrap-around care. Participating students will have a snack, homework help, physical activity, crafts, and more.
C.A.R.E.S.
We see it as incumbent upon us to actively partner and help parents engage in their child's learning. "Humke Elementary School families and staff are working to create a school where all children are Challenged, Healthy, Engaged, Safe, and Supported."
To be successful academically and socially, we believe that children need to learn a set of values that include Cooperation, Assertiveness, Responsibility, Empathy, and Self-Control (CARES). CARES is rooted in Responsive Classroom, an evidence-based approach to education that focuses on the strong relationship between academic success and social-emotional learning (SEL). Together with Conscious Discipline, which equips educators to integrate social-emotional learning, discipline, and self-regulation, teachers spend less time policing behavior and more time teaching vital life skills. These elements are part of a systemic approach to creating a positive school environment for learning.
PARTNERSHIP AND VISION
We embrace our role in serving the families in our community. It is our goal to have all students leave Humke Elementary at grade level and to demonstrate CARES. We will accomplish this because of the partnership we have with our parents, community, and each other.
