The School District of Nekoosa receives revenue from two main sources; property taxes and state aid. The state “caps” how much revenue Nekoosa can receive in property taxes and state aid. In the past 15 years, the revenue “cap” has decreased over 1 million dollars. Nekoosa is receiving less revenue, while expenses continue to increase. The system is unsustainable. In order to raise additional revenue, the district can ask the voters to approve an operating referendum to exceed the state imposed “cap”. The district is asking the community to renew its current operating referendum which would increase the “cap” by $2,000,000 each year for the next five years.
PROPERTY TAX IMPACT
The mill rate is the amount of tax you pay for every $1,000 of your property's assessed value. If approved, the operating referendum would have an estimated property tax impact of $0.02 per $1,000 of assessed property value.
