ACADEMICS AND CAREER PLANS/ADVISORY: CONNECTIONS ARE IMPORTANT TO SUCCESS
Every student at Nekoosa High School works with a teacher who is his/her advisor from the first day of freshman year to graduation day. The advisor also works closely with the student's family to help each student successfully navigate through high school from course selection to keeping grades up and assisting students with developing self-advocacy and conflict resolution skills. A student's advisor is there to help them learn, grow, and develop for the
next stage of their life.
As part of advisory each student has an "Academic and Career Plan" (ACP) to help students set goals for their future and ensure that they are maximizing their high school years. As part of an ACP students do interest inventories, job shadows, select high school courses, etc..
ONLINE COURSES
In addition to offering a variety of courses in our school we also offer students the opportunity to take a wide range of online classes. These classes help us to expand the course offerings available to our students.
AP AND DUAL CREDIT COURSES
We offer a wide range of AP and Dual Credit courses (Dual Credit courses are courses that students take at NHS for credit at Mid-State Technical College). These credits can then transfer to almost any college or university. AP courses range from calculus, statistics, and biology to 2D and 3D art, literature, psychology, and U.S. government and politics. Dual Credit courses range from college algebra and oral communication to welding, marketing, and introduction to Microsoft.
BEYOND THE BOOK
Success in today's world requires communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking skills, too. Students will work together collaboratively with their peers (building communication skills and learning how to resolve conflict) and be asked to think critically and go beyond simply knowing the "right" answer, so that they become great problem solvers, too.
LEARNING IN AND OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM
Learning does not stop in the classroom door. Some of the most important things we learn we don't get in a classroom. Our staff works to get students out of the classroom and into the community. We do this through traditional field trips but also through community projects, job shadowing, Youth Apprenticeships, work experience, and internships.
