The Nekoosa High School will create a culture of trust and ownership with staff, students, and community, and we will create systems that allow us to implement Three Main Strategies that will move us toward our vision.
1. HIGH LEVERAGE INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
All teachers are a part of learning teams, which are a way for every teacher to be involved in continuous improvement. Learning teams will be focused on using evidence of student learning to adapt lessons in real time to meet students’ learning needs.
English Language Arts:
The student engagement model is a way of giving students greater voice and choice in what they read and write about. Each day a teacher has a teaching point that they cover in about 10-15 minutes and then they gradually release students to work independently applying the strategies that they have learned in reading or writing.
Reader’s Workshop/student engagement model, Year 3
Social Studies:
Students explore topics in history and social studies through forming hypotheses and research.
Inquiry Model (Year 2)
Science:
Creating engaging science classrooms for today’s learners. (Year 1)
Math:
Math teachers at Nekoosa High School are working hard to prepare students with the collaborative skills and math knowledge they will need to be successful in the future. We are doing this largely through learning and applying team-study strategies. These are strategies that get students working together to solve math problems that they probably could not solve on their own. In the 2017-18 school year we began CPM algebra I and this year we will be continuing with algebra I and expanding to geometry.
Study team strategies; Replacing integrated math with geometry.
Co-Teaching:
Regular and special education teachers co-plan and co-teach, so that all students may be included in all classrooms.
2. SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING
A study team is examining the introduction of Trauma Sensitive Schools, a training program that helps all staff members recognize and appropriately respond to adults and children who have been affected by trauma in their lives. Examples of trauma range from hunger and homelessness, to serious events such as domestic violence or deaths, etc.
3. EQUITY
A focus at the high school is to help all students find and define their post-secondary path.
