You’ll spend 14,000 days in a marriage, 1,800 days preparing food, 2,400 days parenting….and then there is managing a family budget, hunting for a job, getting yourself organized, choosing clothes, and so much more. Our Family & Consumer Education courses will better qualify you to fulfill these lifetime skills.
Math
A dictionary defines mathematics as the group of sciences using numbers and symbols in dealing with the relationships and measurements of amounts and forms. Mathematics plays an ever-increasing role in the technological advances of society. Our mathematics program, a Blended Mathematics approach, is a four-year mathematics program in which students investigate problems in real-life contexts, developing a rich understanding of important mathematics. Through this study of mathematics, students will grow and improve in the areas rooted in mathematics, as well as other important aspects of life such as: logical thinking, self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving, communication skills, and collaborating with classmates and instructor.
Each year the Blended Math curriculum features four strands of mathematics: algebra and functions, statistics and probability, geometry and trigonometry, and discrete mathematics. This cycle is designed to engage students by investigating and making sense of problem situations. The first three courses in Blended Mathematics provide a common foundation of broadly useful mathematics for all students. The first three courses are required for college admission. Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus continues the preparation of students for success in college mathematics.
Music
Nekoosa High School offers a variety of music courses for both the experienced and non-experienced musicians. Becoming involved in a music course, such as band or choir, will improve a student’s leadership skills, character, and self-confidence. In music, students will work together like a team toward a common goal, develop a great sense of responsibility, and learn to handle themselves in front of an audience. Broaden your knowledge about that which is so present in our everyday lives. Expand your experience and take advantage of the excellent opportunity to improve yourself by enrolling in a music course.
Physical Education
After successful completion of our freshman class, Essentials of PE, students have the opportunity of choosing 2 or more electives from the seven choices listed above. The classes range from non-competitive, non-sport fitness orientated to highly competitive team sport based, with a mixture in between.
Science
The study of science allows students to experience the richness and excitement of the natural world. As adults they will face complex questions requiring thinking, reasoning, and the ability to make informed decisions. Scientific knowledge prepares students for the future and helps them acquire skills needed to hold meaningful and productive jobs. Nekoosa High School recognizes that science is for all students, the essence of science literacy.
Social Studies
The Social Studies department empowers students, through its course offerings, to become active and knowledgeable participants in a global community. By studying current and significant events of the past, along with world economic and social issues, our students will be prepared for the challenges of their future.
Technical Education
Technology & Engineering Education (Tech Ed) is a series of courses that directs the students’ attention to the technologies used in many of today’s top careers and jobs. Course work will use present-day technologies and allow students to explore a large range of career choices. Areas of study are divided into four areas: Engineering, Construction, Manufacturing, and Communication.
World Languages
The World Language Department allows students to participate in different ways of experiencing life. Through exploring other world cultures and languages, students strengthen English skills and build critical cultural perspectives that allow them to meaningfully interact with a truly global community. Such participation is particularly valuable for college-bound students as many colleges and universities require two years of world language study as part of their admissions procedures.
